Every software you use is built from source code — the instructions written by developers to tell a computer what to do. The biggest difference between open source and proprietary software is surprisingly simple:

Can you see and change that code?

  • Proprietary software keeps its code private. Companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Apple build their products behind closed doors. You can use the software, but you can’t see how it works internally or modify it.

  • Open source software, on the other hand, makes its code public. Anyone can look at it, learn from it, and often even change it or build their own version.

Who builds these tools?

Proprietary software is usually developed by a company with a dedicated team of paid developers. The company controls everything — features, updates, and direction.

With proprietary software, you’re limited to what the company provides. If something is missing, you can only request it and wait — no guarantees.
